6.1 MAGNITUDE QUAKE HITS CHILE

A strong 6.1-magnitude earthquake struck off Chile’s central-north area on Wednesday, but authorities said no injuries or damage were reported and discounted the possibility of a tsunami. The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake’s epicenter was 55 miles (88 kilometers) north of Coquimbo, Chile, and had a depth of 37 miles (61 kilometers). It struck Wednesday shortly after 4 p.m.
